Tyre Explosion Rocks Gadong

(Exploded tire - not the real photo taken from the scene mentioned below)

Bandar Seri Begawan - Air of exploding tyres rocked parts of Gadong yesterday, causing members of the public's concern as the shockwaves could be felt through nearby buildings.

The driver of the vehicle, a heavy earth moving truck, was left red faced with embarrassment at the distress caused. "I am sorry for the disturbance, please let them know I apologised," said Zenon Arias from the Philippines.

He added that this was the first time such an incident had happened to him while driving here in Brunei. The middle pair of tyres on the right side of his vehicle had burst while travelling on the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Highway, just as it was nearing the end of the overpass situated in Gadong.

Arias suspected that the numerous trips up and down to Muara could have been a contributing factor in the deterioration of the tyres.

While exploding tyres are known to have a loud bang, the shockwaves were felt by tenants in buildings nearby. "We felt the building shake," said a staff member working at a nearby bank.

"We thought it was a gas cylinder from some of the tenants above," she added. The bank personnel were extremely concerned as a colleague is pregnant and wanted to ensure her safety. The general public began pouring out of buildings, leading to confusion as traffic both human and vehicle alike stopped momentarily.

Security guards of buildings in the area could also be seen rushing outside, inspecting alongside their respective buildings checking for the source of the loud bang which had also set off numerous car alarms in the carparks within the vicinity.

The noise could be heard from as far as Kiulap, with calls being made to members of The Brunei Times to clarify the situation. Some eyewitnesses had suspected that the source of the explosion had originated from the hawker stalls at the Gadong Wet Market.

"I was crossing the street when it happened and for something so loud, I was confident it couldn't have been a tyre," said Ak Zul Majdi Pg Razak. Meanwhile, an observer who spoke on condition of anonymity stressed that the scenarium could have been worse, especially if traffic had been heavy.

"If the truck was travelling at speed when the tyres exploded, the situation could have been a lot worse," she said.

The observer, whose office overlooks the section of the highway said that previously, accidents have occurred in similar circumstances as vehicles tend to lose control after suffering tyre blow outs at speed.

My Comment:
Thank goodness that wasn't around the area.. But with such explosion in the busy area is very unexpectedly dangerous. I'm glad that no body got serious injury. Trucks should not be speed in busy and crowded area.

Zoo paints stripes on donkeys to make 'zebras'

The owner of the Marah Land zoo in Gaza City said he had used masking tape and black hair dye, applied with a paint-brush, to disguise the white females.

Mohammed Bargouthi said it would have cost him more than £25,000 to bring in a real zebra via smuggling tunnels.

"The first time we used paint but it didn't look good," said Mr Bargouthi.

"The children don't know, so they call them zebras and they are happy to see something new."

All the real animals at the zoo, including monkeys and a tigress, had been smuggled under the border at great expense, he said.

Two genuine zebras died of starvation earlier this year during the Israeli military offensive, he added.

The animal restrictions are part of the Israeli blockade of Gaza, imposed in an attempt to reduce rocket attacks and weaken the leadership of Hamas.

9-year-old Girl Designed A Coin

[Florence Jackson with her coin /PA pics]

A nine-year-old girl from Bristol has become the first child to ever design a UK coin.

Florence Jackson's picture of a high-jumper will feature on a 50p coin which will enter circulation next year. She beat 17,000 other entries to win a BBC One Blue Peter competition celebrating the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Florence told the BBC: "It was amazing to see my picture turned into a coin. I can't wait to see it in my pocket money. "I'm so excited. It was a real surprise to win. I'd never entered a Blue Peter competition before, but really wanted to take part because I love drawing.

"I chose the high-jump because I'd watched it on TV before and thought it looked fun." Her high-jump motif is the first in a series of 29 officially-licensed 50p designs to commemorate the Olympics.

Florence was joined by Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis and Blue Peter presenter Andy Akinwolere to strike her first coin at the Royal Mint. Ms Lewis said: "Florence has done all Olympians and Paralympians proud. Her design is simple and effective and I'm honoured to say I saw it first."

The youngest person to have previously designed a UK coin was 26-year-old Matthew Dent from Bangor in Gwynedd last year.

Kojima explains why MGS: Peace Walker is on PSP, not PS3

With the impact and acclaim that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots got on its run on the PS3, you'd think that the MGS with Big Boss on the spotlight will also make its run on the PS3 - would've made for eye-popping graphics and great cutscenes again, yeah? Well, certain considerations were made, and it was decided that the War Economy would be better off with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker heading for the PSP. Hideo Kojima explains why.

Really, I don't think much about whether a platform's portable or for the home. In other words, it's not important to me. With the PS3, you've got a whole range of middle- and high-school kids who can't play your game because their parents don't let them play video games at home. Those kids can whine at their parents all day about how the game's anti-war and anti-nukes, but they'll just respond 'Well, you're still killing people with guns, aren't you?' and brush it off. I wanted to go the extra mile for gamers in that sort of situation. That was one of the reasons I chose the PSP.

On the same interview with 1UP, Ubisoft creative director Patrice Désilets praised Kojima for his risky move, seeing as the previous MGS installment was on a much more powerful platform.

So at the end of the day, Kojima did it so that more people, particularly the kids, would be able to enjoy the game whenever, wherever.

Unemployment Still A Major Concern

Numbers Continue To Rise

Bandar Seri Begawan - The number of Bruneians seeking jobs has climbed in recent months as the Local Employment Section of the Labour Department has confirmed that it received some 4,700 applicants struggling to find employment from January to August this year.

In the past week alone, the section said it received 300 new applications with many searching for jobs in administration, but most of the unemployed still prefer to work in the public sector.

However, according to Haji Mohd Ideni Hj Ahmad, Assistant Commissioner of Labour, locals are slowly but steadily opening up and are taking up opportunities provided by the private sector.

In an interview with the Bulletin, Hj Mohd Ideni said most private companies working in cooperation with the local employment section in search of employees look at an applicant's willingness to work more than his/her qualification.

"An applicant's willingness to work is one of the major driving factors that an employer considers in a potential candidate. Even if an applicant has a primary six qualification, but if he/she is determined and willing to work, it catches the employer's attention.

"It's a different story if the position offered requires high qualification and an under qualified applicant applies," he quickly added.

He said the Local Employment Section is trying to create awareness not only among job seekers but also the private sector.

Hj Mohd Ideni urged those in the private sector to inform the section on jobs that they offer.

Commenting on the employment figures, the assistant commissioner said of the 4,700 applicants it received throughout the year until August, only 189 got jobs in the private sector.

"It's hard to state the actual figures. The 189 could be under-calculated because some employment-seeking cardholders do not inform us once they get jobs. So, we do not know if the numbers are higher," he added.

Hj Mohd Ideni also advised private companies to look into the public private partnership initiative as it would help job seekers find employment directly or indirectly.

Yesterday, the Bulletin witnessed first hand the high demand for employment at the Job Centre in the capital. Unemployed locals were seen sending in applications, queuing in long line's waiting to get interviewed while some were looking at advertisements on the bulletin board for vacancies.

The Job Centre, which is now located in the capital behind the Brunei Hotel, was relocated in September 2008 from its previous place at the Immigrations headquarters.

The centre's functions include counselling; training, advertising and interviewing job seekers.

Cop arrested for stealing girl's underwear during investigation

HYOGO - A 26-year-old local police officer was arrested for theft and illegal trespassing early Tuesday after he allegedly stole 25 pieces of underwear from a 14-year-old girl who lived at an apartment he was visiting as part of an investigation. Officer Yuki Miyamoto is suspected of sneaking into the girl’s room and stealing underwear from her dresser after visiting the apartment on Saturday.

The girl had phoned police after being flashed by a strange man on the same day, and Miyamoto had taken the call. He visited the girl’s apartment on
Saturday afternoon. Only the girl and her younger sister, 13, were home at the time. Later that night, the girl was about to get into the bath when she noticed that all her panties were gone. Her mother called the police.

According to police, after speaking with the girl at the entrance to the apartment, Miyamoto said that he would like to check her bedroom. The girl quoted him as saying that he had to call headquarters in private. She said he took his bag and went into her room to make a call.

Miyamoto first denied the charges, but changed his statement and admitted to stealing the girl’s panties. He said he threw them away after realizing he would be caught.

Man slashes woman because he 'can't get a girlfriend'

OSAKA —

Police said Friday they have arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly

slashing a woman, 30, with a bladed weapon in Higashi-Osaka on Thursday night. The woman suffered minor injuries.

According to police, Akihito Naito was not acquainted with the woman. He was quoted as saying, “I can’t get a girlfriend because women always turn me down. I thought this would make me feel better. I didn’t target any specific woman. Anyone would have been OK.”

Naito reportedly approached the woman, who was chatting with a co-worker, on his bike and cut her from behind. He then threw away his bike and ran away, but was caught by two passersby about 50 meters away. A box cutter was found nearby.

Twitter launches Japanese mobile site

TOKYO - Twitter Inc is turning Japanese. Or at least trying to. The popular microblogging service on Thursday launched a Japan-based mobile version, hoping to penetrate a country where other U.S. social networking sites including Facebook and MySpace have failed to capture much ground.

Japanese is Twitter’s sole foreign language platform so far, and the company’s efforts here indicate it’s serious about making it in Japan.

Twitter teamed up with Tokyo-based Internet firm Digital Garage Inc in early 2008. It launched a Japanese-language platform for cellphones and other mobile devices in the spring of 2008, and hired a Japan country manager earlier this year.

The company is experimenting with making money from features it doesn’t use on its English language site, such as banner ads.

While early adopters were mainly male tech geeks, the messaging service is finally gaining some traction in mainstream Japan. Between January and June, the number of users jumped almost fourfold to 783,000, according to Internet research firm NetRatings.

Japanese celebrities and politicians are starting to sign up. So are traditional media outlets like newspapers and radio stations as well as municipalities and companies eager to take advantage of Twitter’s marketing potential.

Lawmaker Kenzo Fujisue first heard about Twitter from a friend in Silicon Valley and now tweets regularly throughout the day. He has more than 5,400 followers, and his 140-character messages—all in Japanese—range from serious policy issues to the more mundane, like what he ate for dinner.

“People don’t really know what politicians do,” he said. “Twitter helps me give people a glimpse of the lawmaking process.”

Still, Twitter remains a mystery to the vast majority of Japanese web users. Mixi, the country’s top social networking site, has 17 million users and is aiming for 30 million within four years.

The key to expansion in Japan is to go mobile, Digital Garage’s Rocky Eda said back in June.

A survey the company conducted earlier this year showed that 95% of Japanese Twitter users accessed the service via cell phones. Mobile-based writers account for some 40% of regular blogging in Japan, and about a quarter of Mixi users rely on their cell phones to update their pages.

While Twitter already operates a mobile site in English, many of its features are incompatible with Japanese language usage. Instead, many mobile users in Japan had been relying on third-party platforms like “movatwitter.”

The new Japanese mobile version was jointly developed by Twitter and Digital Garage, and is compatible with Japan’s major mobile carriers and the quirks of the local market. Emoticons can be imbedded into messages, and users can directly update their profile without having to turn to their PC.

Yukari Matsuzawa, Twitter’s Japan country manager, says that growth will also depend on users themselves.

“As Japanese people creatively start to use Twitter, it will help define what the tipping point will be,” she said. “It will be a combination of excellent innovative users in Japan as well as more celebrities, as well as influential people.”

Twitter plans French, German, Italian and Spanish sites

Washington - Twitter, the fast-growing micro-blogging service, is seeking volunteer French, German, Italian, and Spanish translators to render its website into other languages.

Twitter’s website, Twitter.com, is currently only offered in English or Japanese.

Biz Stone, a co-founder of the San Francisco-based startup, said in a blog post that Twitter was planning versions of its website in other languages, starting with French, German, Italian and Spanish.

He invited a “small group” of Twitter users to become “volunteer translators” to suggest translations for the Twitter website.

“We will distribute the translations to Twitter platform developers making it easier for them to offer multiple language support as well,” he said.

“We’re very excited that more people will be able to use Twitter in their native language!” he added.

Twitter, which allows users to pepper one another with 140-character-or-less messages known as “tweets,” has grown rapidly in popularity since it was launched in August 2006 and claims to have topped 50 million users.

Turbo The Movie

TURBO is a high adrenaline short film in the tradition of The Karate Kid and Tron. It tells the story of Hugo Park (Justin Chon, Twilight) a misspent youth whose only outlet for angst is a 4D fighting videogame called “Super Turbo Arena”. When Pharaoh King (Jocko Sims, Crash the Series), the Michael Jordan of cyber-sports, announces a tournament to determine who will join his pro-team, Hugo sets his eyes on the prize. But, Hugo isn’t the only gamer who wants fame and glory. If Hugo wants to win he’s going to have to beat Shamus (David Lehre, Epic Movie), the all time Turbo champ at the local Pandemonium arcade, and Ruse Kapri, a feisty prep girl that knows how to win. Realizing he can’t win on his skill alone, Hugo turns to his brother Tobias a former kick-boxer whose last match left him wheel-chair ridden. Together the two will mend old wounds and see if a washed up street fighter can teach a troubled teen how to become a virtual gladiator!

Although it isn’t Japan related, it does show us what the future of gaming could be like… To me, it is more of a mish-mash of Street Fighter, Tron and Mortal Combat! Watch and tell us how you think of the film!
